Perhaps the "news" is that for only around $8000, a student can go off to kolij (to lern to be fesshunul) with a decent-playing C and a decent-playing F tuba...

...and then get a job at Burger King...*IF* they go BACK to kolij and get a masters degree in biz-adm.

Tom, your memory is very good. Marco (age 9) is one of Diego's (age 12) younger brothers. "Phenom", I think, is too strong a word. They are capable, positive kids who work. Here is the low tuba stand that makes holding the big dragon possible:

Marco is a euphonium player and also plays a bass trombone in an elementary band I conduct. It is a big Bach 50BLG with a double trigger and 10 1/2 inch bell. This product helps him hold the heavy thing:

The night before the conference, Diego played in the Kennedy Center right across the river. His brass quartet has other 12-year-old beasts in it. Here is the link:

They start at 38:15 and it is necessary to use headphones or large external speakers to hear the tuba.

WOW!!! Congrats to all of these fine, young performers! I'm truly inspired!

THIS kind of dedication, commitment, performance, and talent needs to be promoted much in the same way our society likes to hype pop music, American Idol-type singing "contests", and spontaneous (and choreographed) musical productions like "Glee". These young folks have clearly invested a lot of time and effort into playing great music. . . and it shows! It will be great to see where these kids end up, whether or not they choose careers in music.

Oh. . . and I need to go practice now.

Thanks, threedognate, for your kind comment. It was a LOT of fun to watch. I showed it to my students (I am an elementary school band director), hoping it will motivate them to practice. I emphasized to them that none of those kids are geniuses, but they practice a lot. I told them that the tuba player is 4' 8" and 70 pounds, so you don't need to be a huge kid to play that instrument. I hope it produces positive results.
