My dog FARTS with a better sound! In fact, the "rescue" horse which I have in my yard ( which would probably have been dead by now if I had not taken it in, FARTS a lot better than that!!!!!
AND, when something other than gas comes out, I can use it to grow great organic vegies - something nobody will ever do with that ****!

That is really my point. The public at large really knows very little about what tubas are supposed to sound like. It is up to us to show them.

Those two demographic rarely cross over any more. :(
Great point! So if the footbal stadium is the only exposure that people get to the sound of tubas, that is what they will think tubas are about!

Resubmitted for your viewing pleasure:
As an alumni of a HBCU, I'll weigh in.

This is a sound that is acutually done on purpose. For some strange and unknown reason, crowds like it....a lot. At the end of the day, music is entertainment. The crowd is entertained. I'm not a big fan of opera, but have no problem with those that like it. I've said this in a previous post on this board: There is nothing like marching into a stadium and having thousands of people chant for the tuba section. It's nice to have folks in the stands that can't wait until the tuba section plays one of their fanfares. It is one of the only times in most of our lives where a tuba player will feel like a rock star. Many may not like the sound.....but it is great to make that many people cheer and dance and sing along with you......not for the band as a whole...but just you and your section mates. Tuba players in other settings may never get to feel that. We got to do it for 10 Saturdays every year.

99% of tuba players get no recognition what so ever, no matter how beautiful they play. Trust me, it's nice to be the guys on the video.
...and the fact that someone that plays as well as bloke gets it speaks volumes.

I find that the older I get the more I lean toward the "short order" events in every aspect of my life. And yes, particularly "that" aspect.

I have trouble (at least in recorded media) listening to entire tuba concerti...and/or even entire movements.
That brings up a point:
If the tuba literature included pieces that shared the same kind harmonic qualities, and melodic integrity of the Dvorak Cello Concerto, and Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto #2, written with a true understanding of the instrument, would it be easier on the ears than some of the concertos that we have now, that are melodically blasé, with every type of scale, and arpeggio, known to mankind? (Not mentioning any names here...)

No. I was just playin around after a rehersal in our tuba room. Some directors absolutely LOSE IT when they hear the blasting tuba sound. I see nothing wrong with it. I mean, college wise(yes I'm thinking about college). I think a school like PVAMU or JSU would be a good fit for me since I play like them very well, and can match their style and loudness note for note. But I can play a concert style pice just the way it's supposed to be played too.

Different strokes for different folks it seems.

I totally feel you on the director thing. I am a college student myself and our school is extreme when it comes to the best sound of our marching band. Among the tuba studio as well playing like that is just something we dont do.

It is amazing how different something sounds when you consider the orientation of the listener.

Tuboss2,

Been away a while and I come back and y'all got 4 pages on this. Tuboss2, we had the infamous thread you mentioned and now we have 4 more pages of the same opinions. Does this mean we can expect another thread from you with yet another video that says "Hey guys, just wondering what you thought of this?" every time you get bored and want to stir up the old guys?

Let me break it down for you. One group loves it and most of these are young people who like energizing sounds and do not mind being stimulated and overstimulated by sounds. I grant that there are some older folks who appreciate the sound, but not so many.

A second group hates this kind of thing and thinks it is anti-musical. Many classical musicians and more traditional folks.

A third small group realize that everything has its place and can appreciate this sound in its realm, which is mostly the football stadium, maybe the basketball arena.

What I find surprising is that NO ONE commented on how the group you posted was not in tune with each other and was not together, either. IDK if this was intentional or not, but it does seem as if they can't keep together and can't play in tune with each other. You'd have to tell me whether a) this is an essential part of this type of sound making or b) whether tuning and rhythm just don't matter or c) something else. By contrast to your clip, the other clip posted, "Tuba players at their best" was in three part harmony, with what sounded like double tonguing on the lead, all the parts together and actually "ringing" in tune on sustained notes. IDK if their tone was different or just that the recording was better.

My reaction is that you ought to know by now what you like and you ought to know by now what other people think, so there isn't a necessity for more "Hey guys, I ran across this clip and wondered what you thought." I would certainly vote in favor of those like minded individuals in favor of these clips having their own section on the forum. If there's any support for this, we can have a thread to name the subforum. "Football tubists" or SouzyBlatt" come to mind for me, but I'm not the best person to ask . . .

I would have to admit that I do play this way when I am trying to piss off or scare my dog and I can do it on trumpet, cornet, flugel, alto horn, baritone, euph and tuba. Also on my front porch at midnight on New Year's Eve, in lieu of a noisemaker.

At the video: gah lee those lows are kicking!!! Reminds me of tuba players playing a fanfare..

And royjohn: is this thing I'm talking about a little dragged out? Ya. But this is a really interesting topic that I feel gets lots of hits each time it's talked about. I'm honestly just talking colleges that portray this kind of sound.

Most people can't play like that bass trombone in the video...that's a bass trombone played by a MAN. Kind of reminds me of me busting pedal F's befoe class.. 8)

But seriously that sound he was producing is not easy, but yet people are so quick to crash an instrument producing the slightest amount of brightness/edginess.
