Andersons

Post by Peach »

Roughly how messed up can valves be before the plating service offered by Andersons ceases to be viable?

If there's play when the valve is sitting in the casing with the top cap on is that perhaps a bridge too far?

Thanks,
Mal

There would be a point where the casings are so oversize that the key slots would be useless but that's about the only scenario I can imagine.

I've sent some very bad things to Anderson and they always seem to come through.

Here is a thread on valve reconstruction which includes the entire plating and honing process. It goes on for a few pages but the part about the valves starts here:

These posts are part of a 'rags to riches' rebuild of a Holton BBb 345 by Dan Oberloh.

If there is sufficient valve sleeve material left so that they can hone the casings true again, and the valve guide keyways can be intact at the end, then the valves can be plated. To date I've only had one valveset that Anderson said was beyond their capabilities, and I'm working on new sleeves for that one, as I really want to make a "Go" of this 1914 Holton, Chicago 6/4 BBb helicon, as it is basically a York 6/4.
