Vaughan Williams Tuba Concerto and Woodwind Quintet

Post by Kory101 »

Hello,

I'm looking where I can purchase the arrangement of the Vaughan Williams Concerto with Woodwind Quintet accompaniment. Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

I just have trouble believing that a WW quintet reduction of the orchestra score, with a solo tuba could sound any good.

I love it!
But he does wander a bit on the cadenza...

....I wonder if OUP knows about this. If they do, great, and they would likely publish it. If not, um...

But I like it. I only miss the low end of the basses, esp in the 2nd mvt. Otherwise, it works. IMNSHO

even pitch isn't bothering me, thanks to a nice leg. Obviously it's a very nice leg.

Perhaps a slightly smaller tuba would have balanced better with the quintet.

snorlax wrote:I frequently do the second movement as a euphonium solo...I bet that euphonium & WW quintet would be a good fit. The transcription does not seem to be missing much of anything except the lower bass, as the bassoon has to stop at Bb below the staff. All in all, it's a great job of extracting the musical content from the accompaniment
There's a lesson in there for aspiring composers, BTW
Kory, did I see where you found it?

Yeah, the cadenzas are sorta random and I might have welcomed some more delicacy in the 2nd movement, but I like the aggressiveness in the outer movements.

Did OUP ever fix all the errors in the original tuba part? I assume everyone had Harvey Phillips's list of corrections? Harvey marked mine in 15 minutes and made me sound 10x better. Thanks, Harvey, for that and everything else. Miss ya madly.

Cute flautist in the vid, too.

I surprise this sounded as good as it did, also the flautist legs are very distracting.

Well, I have to say I was wrong! I think that the arranger did a great job. 8)

I do, however, think that the scope of the piece is necessarily compromised, because a WW quintet does not have the tonal density to adequately balance with a tuba.

To exacerbate the situation, I think that the soloist in this performance plays it a little like there is a full orchestra behind him. If he were to lighten up a bit (maybe a smaller horn?), it would balance better, and make more sense.

No easy feat, to balance with a WW quintet!

I don't think it is published.

I came across the music a while back and this is on the bottom:

I've seen this accompaniment floating around, but I haven't heard a recording until now. I like it a lot! I think one would just have to be aware of the inherent balance issues and play accordingly. A smaller horn can help, but you could also just play a little lighter

IMHO I think this accompaniment has more color than the piano reduction. The 3rd movement is perfect for WW's! With the low register cap in the bassoon, I bet you could have the horn player take some stuff down an octave if they have the chops. Of course the video isn't of great quality, maybe the bassoon had a little more "bass" when heard live.
There are appropriate times for beauty and crudeness - use both.
