Acetylene vs. propane

I'm moving into various aspects of welding at an advanced age, and with one of my children (who is primarily into MIG at the moment). So ...

It seems that a lot of folks (not constrained to brass repair) are using oxy/propane rather than oxy/acetylene.

Please discuss pros and cons.

I have never soldered on brass instruments with anything but acetylene.

Sorry. I was a bit unclear. I'm not so concerned with soldering (soft or hard) on brass instruments with this particular question. I have an air/acetylene set-up now that should work well for that.

I'm more concerned with gas welding (rather than soldering or brazing) -- if I should choose to move in that direction. Propane seems a lot mover convenient (easier to get, generally safer, etc.). Maybe not quite the degree of heat as oxy/acetylene, but definitely good enough. But heavier than air and so it has some additional (at least minor) risks in that direction.

I guess one thing I'm wondering is: Why not use oxy/propane rather than oxy/acetylene for general welding?

I keep waiting for someone(perhaps Bloke) who will come on this thread and announce: I sell tubas and tuba accessories.
