There is quite an extensive article in Wikipedia on "Concert Pitch".

It seems that for pitch standards lower than A=440 you have a choice of "Diapason normal" at A=435 (the old French standard), "New Philharmonic pitch" at A=439 (an old British standard), and I have a vague recollection of reading about a low pitch used by military bands, but I can't find that reference now. There is also the pitch used for baroque ensembles, which I think is A=415 (pitches actually used in baroque times ranged from A=410 up to A=480)

If the recording bell is fixed, it has three pistons, and is pitched in Eb... it's indeed a model 1235. I used one for Dixieland for several years. I even added a fourth piston in order to have more fingering options. The fundamental pitch was OK but it was still less than stellar. The main tuning should be in the leadpipe... making for an easy cut. Check for leaks, obstructions, and compression before cutting.

Hi-
Just a FYI re. high pitch-- of course, in the 19th C, different makers had different ideas on just what high pitch was--but here is a page from a 1924 CG Conn catalog giving their view of high pitch...enjoy...mark

[quote="nycbone"]Thanks! That's consistent with what I've read, so it seems that 'my' horn may have a build or mechanical/maintenance issue. A mummified mouse fell out of it the other day. I'll have to hose it out to see what else may have lived there. :|

Hi-
If, after playing the horn, you get a craving for cheese, blame the old mouse :D ...

Valve replating ($270)
Cutting up to 4 slides/may require repositioning a few braces (if necessary) ($??? <-- Dan, do you have a ballpark estimate for worst case?)

I think it would be a nice horn for ~$1000 invested. What do you think?

Thanks.
Unless you are talking about just plating the pistons and just living with whatever condition the casings are in... a valve will cost around $600 and take about ten weeks. The other work csn pretty much happen while the valve section is off the horn. Any intonation adjustments could not happen until the valve section is back on the horn.

There would be no guarantee regarding the outcome. Like I mentioned before... the performance of these horns is less than stellar... in my opinion.

Hmmmm.... That's a bit pricey for a project horn.

Any thoughts about my offer ($250) for the horn? I don't want to cheat the band, but I know that horn will never be used if I don't rescue it.
