Next year's schedule has been released, and it contains the Messiaen piece Turangalila-Symphonie. Not knowing this famous piece, I bought a recording. Besides being highly unpleasant on first listening, it sounds difficult. Does anyone here have a tuba part I could look at by way of preparation? I don't think Abe Torchinsky got around to this one! Thanks.

I played the Seattle premier of this a few years ago. There are some counting issues, but the tuba part is not that hard. There is also a lot of tacet in the part, a lot. No real technical or range issues. The part I had was marked with some interesting performance dates, including Boston in, I think, 1949. It is a very long work. It will grow on you a little bit. Good advice. I really like the piece, and came to like it only after ten or so listenings. Try to find the newer version with the LSO (not sure of the conductor) with Maurice Murphy playing Principal Trumpet. Ozawa also did a nice job with Toronto.
