ITEC Observations, etc.?

When David Zerkel came off the stage after playing Grant's new Three More Furies, it turned out he had played with such effort and intensity that he looked like he had just run at least a 5k, maybe more. It surprised me to the point that at first I forgot to compliment him on the amazing musical performance that was the result of that physical effort.

Roger Bobo said in a master class, "It's hard to be wrong with dynamics, unless you don't use them."

A couple of years after discovering the tuba world learned to appreciate her a long time ago, I finally got to reconnect face to face with Caryl Conger after 30+ years.

ALSO: It was great to meet a bunch of people in person that I've only known on here or on ITEA conference calls: Bloke was very helpful and a lot of fun to talk with, and it was enjoyable to meet Jonathan in person and play his tubas. If I was going to take another run at F tuba, his new B&S-like horn would be a contender.

I was able to get away from rehearsals, gigs, the shop, etc. on only Thursday. However... I managed to spend about six hours carousing the vendor areas catching up with old friends and making a few new ones. I would have liked to spend the whole week in concerts and master classes but as it was... the day was wonderful.

Smiles were plentiful. I didn't see anyone having a bad time!

Those are some goofy pictures.

What I meant is that photos of people playing in the elephant room are neither good pictures of the people, nor good pictures of the tubas. Probably the visual equivalent of the sounds from the elephant room. I don't mean that to sound harsh, but some of those are kind of awkward pictures. And trust me, I've been the subject of more than a few goofy-looking photos.

Back to the tuba content... what is the horizontal "bar" under the top bow on some of those tubas? Interesting and different!

The bar enables you to put your arm through the horn (as opposed to 'over' the upper bow) to pull the 1st slide while allowing the arm to rest on the bar--for any of us with bad shoulders, a huge plus!!
