Mouthpiece rims

Post by Euphistuba »

I have looked at the archives and really couldn't find a answer

How does the width of the rim impact playing? I realize for some that a wide rim makes playing longer easier. But at what cost? Does a narrower rim gain some flexibility ? What about flat vs rounded?

What are your thoughts and or experiences?

Thanks

Without answering at all -- note that you will see a range of different mouthpiece positions, between different people. The mouthpiece may sit high on the mouth, or low, centered or closer to the edge ... might shift noticeably for low vs. high notes, or not so much. Faces look different, teeth, etc. So answers may reasonably vary from one person to the next.

My only comment is that, depending on a player's embouchure and optimal mouthpiece placement on the embouchure, that the rim should not be so wide as to bump the nose or slide around on the chin and prevent consistent optimal placement.

Bloke!
You have answered my question totally!

I was using a wider rim and it felt likening was anchored to my face. The rim you describe for mr curmudgeon sounds like exactly what I need as well.
I plan to pair it with your imperial cup! So which of your rims is this none so I know what to ask for when I call!?

Thanks very much for your help!
