Sousaphone BBb to CC conversion

Post by Dan Schultz »

There's been considerable talk about slides to change CC tubas to BBb tubas. And... cutting BBb tubas to CC tubas. I've also seen threads about cutting sousaphones to CC. Here's the start on one I'm building starting with Conn 36K...

Yeah.... there's a market for it but don't tell the folks in China!

Terry... counterbores can be purchased from most any industrial outfit that handles metal cutting tools. Counterbores are used to enlarge a screw hole for the head of a capscrew. They are simply end-cutting mills with a pilot to engage the hole being enlarged.

I doubt if you'll find them at Harbor Freight but I'm sure McMaster-Carr or ENCO has them. With just a little pressure I can 'eat' an inch of 3/4" tubing in just 15 seconds or so. Not expensive. I think I invested less than $100 in two sizes of counterbores and four pilots.

Wouldn't this one be a nice candidate for your next CC sousaphone project?

I'd be a little worried about the 'brickly brass' on that one!
