I'm so sad I couldn't be there... but it was great to finally meet you, however briefly. Congratulations on this important acquisition!

The fellow I purchased it from told me that he had acquired it from the University of Illinios.KiltieTuba wrote: I believe this instrument may have been owned by the University of Illinois, as the University of Iowa wasn't considered "U of I" until the 1960s or 1980s. Indiana University is another possibility, but why call it by the wrong name?
I've emailed the music department at the University of Illinois, regarding the tuba.
When I get home from Quebec I'll see if I have an appropriate Euro shank mouthpiece to send you for it.
Enjoy an extremely interesting horn!

If it is from the U of I, I wonder if it was one of the infamous Rumbelow instruments. There was a scandal at Illinois about a year ago in which the (now former) director of bands Robert Rumbelow was taking old instruments out of university storage and selling them on ebay for personal profit. Sine I live just 20 minutes outside campus and will be part of the Marching Illini/concert band at the U of I this upcoming school year, I might inquire if anymore remembers this beast laying around anywhere and when it was sold. Hopefully this in't one of those instruments.bigtubby wrote:The fellow I purchased it from told me that he had acquired it from the University of Illinios...KiltieTuba wrote: I believe this instrument may have been owned by the University of Illinois, as the University of Iowa wasn't considered "U of I" until the 1960s or 1980s. All that aside, that is one awesome horn, congrats, Ian!

I wonder if this opens up a can of worms for buyers of the storage instruments this guy sold if UI decides to pursue the return of instruments taken and disposed of without official permission.SousaWarrior9 wrote:If it is from the U of I, I wonder if it was one of the infamous Rumbelow instruments. What community band do you play with in Michigan? It'd be cool to check you out playing it if you're close enough.

Ian if you are up for it and the band allows it I would like to hear/see it in action with an ensemble.
Cant carry a tune but I can carry a tuba.

For what it's worth dept.:
In the mid-1990s I had occasion to visit with Mickey Moore at Illinois and was
shown this ginormous EEEb. (my description).
