Bruckner 8 and 9 on Telarc. I don't know if I've ever heard such cohesive and precise brass playing on those two pieces and of course the tuba is a big part of that. Every thing is absolutely spot on.

Correct. He played a Willson 3050 for a while, not sure whether he did any recording on it though.I believe an Alexander 163CC was his primary tuba.
Gnagey CC, VMI Neptune 4098 CC, Mirafone 184-5U CC and 56 Bb, Besson 983 EEb and euphonium, King marching baritone, Alexander 163 BBb, Conn 71H/112H bass trombone, Olds Recording tenor trombone.

Ok. I bought the PT-10 F tuba he used to own. I can see that he used it, but I'm having trouble finding recordings of him using it.

Re: Favorite Mike Thornton recording?
Mike used his PT-10 on this recording: http://www.amazon.com/Berlioz-Symphonie ... ny+berlioz" target="_blank
(I'm playing a YEB-321 on the second part).

To this day I have never heard anyone play as loud as Mike played on his F. Well, any tuba player, obviously Pete Norton was putting out some dBs on bass trombone.
I know Mike was proud of this one (Alex CC): http://www.amazon.com/Bruckner-Symphony ... y+bruckner" target="_blank

Mike didn't use the Wilson very long and I don't know if he used it on any recordings... He sold his back-up Alex (with a half-step fifth valve, IIRC) to get the Wilson (he was afraid that his main horn would get totally worn out; he had worn several holes in it). He ended up selling the Wilson to a student at Miami U. and bought another Alex, which I believe is the one Ted Cox recently posted a photo of in another thread (oddball fifth valve slide - sticks out on the side). His main horn was an Alex with a main tuning slide "T-bar" and, I think, a 2-3 fifth.
My recollections, I'm open to being corrected.
