What's the best way to clean silver plating?

Post by daflyingtubaman »

Hello tubenet. I am wondering what would be a good way to clean the outside of my f tuba. I have a silver plated yfb-822 and the horn has been getting a bit dirty as of late. It's not tarnish, just from normal use, but I would like to know what to use to clean it off with. Dish soap? Regular soap? Something else entirely? Your help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hagerty's or Wright's Silver Creme. What might look like dirt is probably a bit of tarnish.

Once you have it clean try keeping one of these cloths handy for touch ups

Lee Stofer recommended Mothers Mag and Aluminum polish in another thread. I bought it at O'Reilly Auto Parts. It worked wonders on both silver and raw brass instruments. A coat of car wax keeps it nice much longer.

Tarni Shield from 3M is what I have always used. It cleans gently and helps prevent tarnish from recurring. And my horn is beautiful, if I do say so myself.

A positive review for the Mothers' car products endorsed by Lee Stofer. I used the cleaner wax and polish on my 85 year old King tuba which is nickel plated and the horn looks fabulous. I will be really happy to not have to clean this plating so often.

I was told to use plain Windex with a soft cotton cloth for everyday routine cleaning.

Connesuer silver cloth two sided and it keeps everyday tarnish off, little elbow grease and you don't have to get the horn in the tub!

I once had a repairman suggest windex for cleaning. Works really well on fingerprints, water drop marks, etc. rather than on tarnish.
