horn needed this TH&FR in the UP,Iron Mountain, MI
Does anyone know of a decent F or CC tuba that I could use this thursday/friday to play at a funeral? I would be most appreciative of any help.
Thanks,
Mike Roylance

How far north is that from the Ohio-Michigan border?

It is in the UP, about 350 miles.
I am fortunate to have a great job that feeds my family well, but music feeds my soul.

Thanks for the offer of the Eb susie but Im not sure that would fit a funeral setting, at least this setting.

F and CC are rare up in the UP. You'd have better luck with a BBb or Eb. Check with area high schools, maybe UMD in Duluth has something you can borrow. Depending on where you are traveling through, you might try a music store in the area that would rent you something for a day or two. Green Bay should have a good music store. That isn't too far away.

The Music Dept. at Northern Michigan University in Marquette may be able to help. When I last attended there in the mid-90s, the school had just BB-flat Mirafones in its inventory, but the low brass professor was retiring. Perhaps they've added an F or CC since then.

Dang... Iron Mountain is WAY out there. The upper peninsula is beautiful, but it's not near very much... which is also why it's so beautiful. My wife has family in the UP, but unfortunately, not a tuba player among them. Wish I were out there this week, I'd have let you borrow mine for sure.
A few thoughts:
I can't remember if the Green Bay Symphony closed last year, or if this is the last year. You might want to look up/contact their tuba player. That's about 2 hours away.
About the same distance as Green Bay is Appleton, WI, and Marty Erickson teaches at Lawrence University there. I believe he's a BBb/Eb guy, but he might be able to give you some direction. That's a little more than 2 hours away.
Traverse City is about 5.5 hours away, one way.
If all else fails, Jim Laabs Music is based in Stevens Point, WI, which is about 3 hours away. Maybe they'd cut you a deal to borrow one in exchange for some nice words about it.

I don't know if Wes Jacobs still has his horns, but he's in Traverse City. I know he's an Eb guy, but he may at least have a lead on a horn for you.

If you can play Eb, you should borrow that sousaphone that was offered earlier in the thread--better than nothing (I think).

If you are flying in directly, then you have a small plane. Take your own F or borrow a travel tuba in F and take it with you. I don't see many other choices.
