2 stuck pistons?

Post by ZACH336 »

Hello everybody I have a horn with two stuck pistons #1 & #2 that I cannot remove from the horn any advice on how to remove them? So far I've droped oil down the top of the piston the bottom and down from the open slide with no effect. The horn hasn't been played in several months any advice on removing the two stuck valves?

thanks for any advice

First choice - get the horn to a competent repair person.

If that is impossible for now, keep dropping oil on the valves every day. If they don't GENTLY come loose after a few days of that, see "First choice."

First, is the oil you're using "penetrating oil" from the hardware store (not valve oil)? If it's not penetrating oil, GET some, use it generously, and let it work for a day or so. I've loosened many a stuck valve this way.

If the horn is silver plate, you can also try running very hot water over the valves. You might get lucky. I've NEVER loosened one this way -- partly 'cause I've never had a silver plated horn! But I've occasionally heard of someone doing this successfully.
WARNING: Hot water will cause some lacquers to separate from the horn in sheets, so DON'T use hot water on a lacquered instrument!!

If you still don't have the valves loose enough to remove without forcing, get the horn to a repairman. I wouldn't expect the bill to be that much, and anything beyond oil and hot water risks a MUCH higher repair cost.

Thanks for the replys I ended up taking the horn to a repair shop to have them solve the problems and have a good bathing. Hopefully all turns out well. :P
