John Adams.
Instead of talking to your plants, if you yelled at them would they still grow, but only to be troubled and insecure?

Re: Recommendations for a composer for concerto
Barbara York. But she's done it already.
John Adams, certainly. James Grant. Steve Reich would be...interesting.
Elfman?
I'd be thrilled if John Corigliano would write for us, for either instrument.
David Baker. Chen Yi. Joan Tower. David Holsinger. Jan Bach. Michael Horwood. Tony Plog.
I'm not sure of Karel Husa's recent situation...he's well into his 90s and likely not composing any more, but I don't know.

I think John Mackey would be able to write something with some fireworks... He's writing some really cool stuff for band right now and his Harvest trombone concerto written for Joe Alessi is badass!

Re: Recommendations for a composer for concerto
I would love to hear something from Anthony Barfield as well! His trombone piece "Red Sky" is a really cool piece.
One composer that recently grabbed my attention is F.J. Martinez Gallego. His Sinfonía Nº 1 "Kaprekar" is one of the coolest pieces I have heard in a VERY long time. I would be interested to see what a solo composition (concerto or otherwise) for tuba would sound like.
For those interested (if for no other reason, check out the size of the band in this video. They play REALLY well too...):
Sinfonía Nº 1 "Kaprekar" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VV6MsKC2oyU" target="_blank
Tuba solo at about 7:55!

Re: Recommendations for a composer for concerto
I would ask a composer to write something for voice then once finished tell him to now transpose it for tuba. This way it may actually be a piece enjoyable to listen to instead of something that is written for effect. John Stevens would be on top of my list as he already has written some great pieces.

I bet Steven Bryant could whip up something nice. As with John Mackey, Bryant's works are quite popular with high school and college bands right now.
My "probably not gonna happen but would be really cool if it did" pick is Wynton Marsalis.

Small list:
Hans Abrahamsen
Toshio Hosokawa
Chaya Czernowin
Enno Poppe
Aaron Cassidy
Liza Lim
There are some other composers I'd like to write for tuba, but I'm already working to commission them!

I'd like to see a tuba concerto by Sonny Kompanek, David Holsinger, or James Barnes.

Jennifer Higdon, hands down. She can write a real tune and she's a fabulous orchestrator

Re: Recommendations for a composer for concerto
I got mine already from Victor Davies. Most anyone else I'd want is deceased... but I hear occasional surprises from time to time
I may try one for me... but most modern palettes (or palates!) don't interest me much. Lady Gaga?

I'll throw my vote in for Christopher Rouse. I've really dug his oboe and flute concertos. Who knows, since he's a composer in residence with the NYPO maybe he can write something for Alan Baer to premier.
