Which do you prefer or despise? Inquiring mind wants to know.

Both. Or neither. The Eb needed a little more "heft," but the large BBb needed a little quicker response.

But I'm being incredibly picky here. Bottom line: they both sounded great.

Just another reason why a King BBb souzy is a popular instrument for this genre, style and venue.

Bell fronts help somewhat in street gigs. However, I have used Eb and BBb helicons, Sousaphones, bell fronts and bell up tubas (mostly front action valves) on hundreds of outdoor gigs. It really depends on how well the horn can bark (a bit) - even my little Yamaha 103 upright has a full sound that is great on the street in some circumstances (plus it is very light!)

I have used a very old Disten 3 valve Eb upright a few times - the voice is just not full enough for most group applications. I had a Conn BBb 1930s bell front four valve - not quite a monster, but it was very big and heavy. Too awkward for playing standing up, but it had a great sound.

BTW, you might have a conversation with your Tamborine player about where the beat is!

Completely agree about the Kings. I have an old 2341 (recording bell) and a 1258 (with both bells) and they are both the perfect mix of "heft" and nimbleness IMO.

Tuba is not a shy instrument, especially in a street band. To me the debate isn't about Eb versus BBb, it is about showmanship. A helicon or sousa shows and projects better. All the player/horns sound good here. A helicon or sousa in their hands would add to the flash of the band.

What about your Kanstul 66S? I think that could do the job.

My Kanstul can do very well in most situations, but when outside without a band shell or similar sound director, I would likely choose the helicon instead. Not only can it handle a 30 piece band but it attracts more attention. People really like to see it played, are curious about it, or just smile. It adds to the fun.
