Instead of talking to your plants, if you yelled at them would they still grow, but only to be troubled and insecure?

If Moma ain't happy, ain't nobody happy! I forgot to turn off the furnace blower before sanding the new sheetrock in the basement. Now the dust is all over the house and guess who is all over me! I repeat, If Moma ain't happy, ain't nobody happy!

Seattle TC was on the 9th. I'm going to the TC in Silverdale (near Bremerton, WA) on the 20th. First TC in Silverdale. The horn I'm using is raw brass and I'm polishing it up. The patina wasn't/isn't even so it needs it....

TubaChristmas - Evansville, Indiana is tomorrow at 7pm at Barnes & Noble Bookstore. I pride myself in taking something 'different' each year. In past years, I've taken a King 'pit' model rotary... a Conn 48K sousa... a King 'monster' rotary... other stuff most folks don't see in a lifetime.

This year will be a little different yet! I'm taking a chromatic Alphorn. It's my regular Alphorn in F to which I have fitted a F horn valve section. Instead of engraining F tuba fingerings I cheated by transposing the music to use regular BBb fingerings.

I can assure you... I'm no virtuoso! There are some YouTube clips of some Alphorn trios that were recorded outside live at Volksfest. They sounded pretty nasty but someone thought they would be good enough to post.

A few summers ago one of the guys in my band had his son, who was a french horn player with the either NY Phil or Met (I can't remember which), come and do a horn solo with us. Then he did a Alphorn solo with the band and followed that with a Alphorn duet with his wife. I was floored at how well they could play those things and what they could get out of them. An alphorn duet was probably not what the summer crowd thought they were coming to hear that hot summer night.

The valved version sounds much the same except for some additional notes!

So how do you get away with an Alp horn at Tuba Christmas? It would not be allowed at our assembly.

Why not? The Alphorn is the 'original' natural F tuba! ... made waaaay before the tuba was even thought of. We have all sorts of stuff show up at our local TubaChristmas functions. I always try to take along something that common folks don't see just every day. Last year I played a King 'monster' rotary tuba. The year before was the 48K. A couple of years back I was commissioned to build a euphonium that resembled a saxophone. We've had several serpents over the years and I think it was six or seven years ago we have NINE double-belled euphoniums.

Aside from the Alphorn this year... we had a double-belled euph, an ancient Eb helicon, and a tournister tuba in CC. Ironically, no sousaphones this year.

Aside from taking the odd stuff to TubaChristmas.... I take a BBb cimbasso to 'JingleBones'. Not exactly a slide trombone but something interesting to talk about.

I REALLY don't think Harvey would have minded!

I don't have a clue what I'll take next year but you can bet it will be something that no one is expecting.

What part of this Webster definition doesn't fit the Alphorn.

: a large low-pitched brass instrument usually oval in shape and having a conical tube, a cup-shaped mouthpiece, and a usual range an octave lower than that of the euphonium

Just a little something for you 'purists' to think about... 'tuba' is Latin for 'trumpet'.
