36K Street Rod Paint Job

Post by Tim Jackson »

Well, I wanted something light that looks more like a vintage sousaphone for my serious jazz gigs. I found this on someone's front porch and gave em' $20 for it. Perfect candidate for my faux paint project. I cut some PVC trim out of molding I found at home depot. Glued it on with Gorilla Glue. I used painters tape to mask off certain trim pieces. The Rustoleum paint seemed to stick very well to brass parts as well as the fiberglass. Bell collar and a few other details got the hammered silver pewter paint while the other parts got a combination of gold/brass/copper paint. I used all Rustoleum spray paints and a small amount of ebony oil stain to enhance the patina. Faux painting with oils is a bit tricky as any rubbing or attempts to remove paints by ragging has to be done seconds after the finish is sprayed. Thanks to Arts Music-Montgomery (leadpipe and receiver). Chuck Schwartz - clean up and solder work. Schmidt's Music-Pensacola (dents and felts). It plays nicely and in some ways as good as my metal sousaphones and MUCH LIGHTER. I wish it had the short action valves like my 20K fiberglass Conn.

That is a really cool paint job on a fiberglass souzy! I like the added reinforcing "wire" on the back of the bell.
