Video Recording on Tuba - Advice Needed!!

Post by EdwardTomic »

Hello!

I'm auditioning for the Eastern Music Festival, and I have to upload a video audition. I need some advice on a good recording device, and maybe some tips for a successful audition with the recording. I get to record to the excerpts and solos all separately so I'll be able to get takes I'm happy with.

Thanks for your help! - Ed

Use a good microphone. Both Zoom and Tascam have a nice selection, with a variety of features at different price points. You should be able to get something decent for about $100.

You can take the video with your phone, if you have one. Just make sure it is stable and that you frame yourself up in a pleasing way to the eye. Try to show all of your instrument and as much of your face as possible. There are even some very usable microphones that will work with your smartphone.

Sync the audio with the video in any non-linear editing software. There are many available. If you have a MAC, iMovie should be OK for this.

Try to have some reverb, but not too much! Best to play in a room that has some natural reverberation. Do not use a compressor or limiter on the audio. Try to get a clean recording from the start.

I hope this is helpful.
