February 15th, every man's favorite day -- the longest possible time before the next Valentine's Day.

Well, only half kidding. My wife and I celebrate, but we both think the commercialization of it is pretty ridiculous. Plus, she doesn't like chocolate and doesn't like roses. How much easier can that be for me! But really, I proposed to my wife on Valentine's Day, so I think we celebrate that far more than we do a naked baby with a bow and arrow who shoots people in the ***.

Today,Buffalo broke a record for cold on this date--it was -10 degrees below zero this morning with a wind chill of -40 below zero. Just South of here it was recorded an actual temperature of -28 below zero. Our old record was from 1904.
It is now about 1120AM and it is nice & sunny and it has 'warmed up' to actual temp of -4 below zero with a wind chill of -20 below zero......

The ugly blotch of purple and magenta that disfigures eastern North America is apparently a jet stream issue that's been going on for a while, I mean it has apparently been stuck there for a year or so. The region suffering the worst from this has actually been the west coast, specifically California, where it's all sunny and warm - too sunny, serious drought going on, bad stuff for agriculture.

Arid land in America has been irrigated by water pumped in from other states

... though the above is about snow pack, and the expectations of alpine runoff, in the very same state of California, plus rainfall directly to that area, so really more or less the opposite.

To supplement water drawn from California rivers, they use ground water, of course at rates that considerably exceed replenishment so the water table's sinking. Not unique, same thing going on in the Great Plains, where the aquifer is big but not infinite. We could keep it going another 100 years if we're lucky, so anyone reading this will be dead - so no worries, there, and of course if you're going to worry about that you might as well worry about soil erosion and everything, and it would look real depressing.

It's pretty silly to suggest that man's activity has any significant effect on climate

Excuse me, did someone mention anything about that, or is any serious discussion of any meteorological facts tantamount to pulling your chain? The story I got on the jet stream is that they're still trying to figure out exactly what the cause is. But sure, hoax, ruling class, tax-and-spend ... great material for "Update update."

Well, today I put a few pounds of carbon back into the atmosphere that had been sequestered under ground for millions of years. I think if I can get a few other people to do the same every day for a couple of years, we might be able to affect the climate. (At a faster rate than might occur naturally.)

Minneapolis public schools close when the wind chill is expected to be -35F or lower. The wind chill right now is -27F. Sorry kids...

I braved the cold last night to go pick up a friend's tuba. He's letting me borrow it until my CC sells, and then it's mine! Hirsbrunner tubas are freaking awesome.
