My CC has a 19 inch bell, and I can put it in a Camry trunk with PLENTY of room. There's even an ample amount of room with it in a hardshell.

My sister for some odd reason measures trunks by how many dismembered bodies she could fit into her trunk (some odd zombie apocalypse reason). She estimates the Camry to be about a 12 body trunk. I call it a "CC and F in gig bags" size trunk.

My 6/4 tuba in a dent bag fits just fine in the trunk of a 2005 VW Passat. Not Japanese, but whatev'.

Recently I got a Toyota Yaris while my Landcruiser was on repair.
Probably you know that I have a Melton 200, a true kaisertuba with 500 mm bell.
I always transport it in its hardcase (Jakob Winter), which has 580 mm outside width.
It perfectly fit in the backseat of the car both in width and length.
Impossibly in the trunk.

Whatever happened to having a big blanket? In this day and age, unless you do own a '60's Chrysler Imperial, I don't believe anybody makes a trunk large enough.

I was able to fit my Buescher helicon (with 20" bell) into the trunk of a friend's Camry for a couple of trips to Florida, with room to spare. Some tilting was needed to get it in, but it fit nicely. I had a folding dolly for schlepping my bass under the horn, along with some blankets.

Did that with a Holton 345 bell + gigbag lots of times on my Kia Forte (fake Japanese but good enough)

Just tilt the bell vertically when the bell is facing the trunk. After a few times it comes naturally.

My 6/4 Neptune with its 20.5" bell inside its Cronkhite gig bag just fits inside the trunk of our 2014 Nissan Altima. When I tested this I believe that I had the bell facing the back of the car, and the rear seats did not need to be folded down. I normally carry it in the back of my Mini Cooper Clubman, however, it is not hidden and the back seats are folded flat....

My Conn 20J with a 24" bell fits into the trunk of my Toyota Corolla. I have to take the bell off and rotate it in a particular way. Generally, I carry it in one piece in the back seat on a furniture pad unless it needs to "be hidden".

Your friend could just get a roof box for it. No need to worry about the trunk opening - just lock her down on top.



Or if he wants to save a few bucks just get a pair of Thule roof bars and strap it on top in its gig bag Don't forget the bungy cords.

6/4 Baer fits in a 2003 corrola trunk. You must almost turn the tuba upside down and then insert the bell first and then twist as you lay the tuba down in the trunk. There's plenty of room in the trunk. Just the entry is tight.

When I had my Willson 3050, I didn't look it up but that sucker had a massive bell on it, it fit in my old 2002 Camry fine, If I'm remembering correctly there was some finagling, but it didn't have to go in there vertically, ect.

I used to have a Miraphone 1291 5V C in a Cronkite bag, which was only a 18.5" bell plus maybe another .5" for padding from the case, and I could easily fit this in my 2006 Civic with some room, so I'm sure you can find a car that would hold it.

Would they consider a hatchback with a hard cover? That could increase the number of cars to consider.

With that being said, my horn fits very well in the back of my 2013 Elantra GT in a leather bag with room to spare, and no tilts are needed. The hatch has a hard cover so the horn is out of sight.

I thought of a hatchback as well, or (since there are far more of them in the US market) a small, unibody SUV like a Ford Escape or similar. I think they still come with those retractable window shade style cargo covers that would conceal a tuba pretty well.

Of course, potential thieves, were they of the gambling ilk, might see the drawn cargo cover and break in on the off-chance there is something back there. I guess it depends on your neighborhood.

You're gonna be fine with a Camry. Totally. Those trunks are deep. You'll see what we mean by a little tilt to get in. I had a Camry for 10 years and I even fit both my horns in the trunk once... 19.5" bell Nirschl 4/4 and my F. You'll be fine.

Camrys have become the modern Model T. They're extremely durable, don't cost a huge amount, and have a ton of room. Even so, I had to go to something bigger to carry two tubas, a trombone, a bass, and an amp.
