I've decided I need to stop spending any *real* money on cell phones. Not that I've ever spent that much money on any one single phone (usually around $100 at renewal time), I have terrible luck with phones, no matter how careful I am with them or how bulky/protective of a case I use. I think I'm on my 5th or 6th phone in 2 years now.

Yesterday, I pulled my phone out of my pocket to see that the camera lens on the back (which is quite large) had shattered. And not like when the screen cracks, this is literally a jagged circle of broken glass. I covered it with a piece of tape, but I think whatever caused that to shatter also messed with something internal (or glass shards got inside). No clue what happened, I've never dropped it or abused it. On the phone I had before this, the speaker died on it. Kind of useless to have a phone that can't ring. It should have been a decent backup, but, no such luck.

As a replacement, I bought a base model no-contract phone for $20. If that goes well, I may never buy a fancy phone again. They are fun and all, but not worth the money if it lasts 4 to 6 months. I'm definitely glad I've never spent $$$ on an iPhone!

Any recommendations for an "indestructible" smart phone? I may even leave Windows Phone if there's a relatively inexpensive alternative that is durable and well-built.

All that trepidation for two pieces that you probably know by memory. Such is the life of a tuba player.
I am fortunate to have a great job that feeds my family well, but music feeds my soul.

Preparing for an extended stay in Africa (Nigeria and South Africa) with wife and stepson. Coming back to Needles, looking forward (no joke) to my mother moving in with us and finally getting some long needed jaw surgery so I can finally get back to playing. (The last tuba playing job I had was at a Vietnamese television station in 2008. It was a temporary staff position that also involved leading an orchestra and arranging music.) I have no idea how long my recovery would be. There have been so many setbacks. It seems like everything is finally coming all together.

I still can't decide whether to use 24 or 235 for Db and Gb on my CC... One is flat and blows nicely. The other is more in tune and easy to lip down, but more resistance... To work on blowing through resistance or to work on lipping up? Hmm...

It depends. For isolated/sustained notes, pick the one that sounds/plays/responds the best, and learn to play it in tune. For notes in motion, pick the one that is the easiest to finger. I doubt you would want to go chromatically C to Db or D to Db with 235.

Up early and on the bus to the international parade competition in Limerick this morning.
Looking forward to it as we are hosting a band from the UK The Romford Drum and Trumpet Corps
http://www.rdtc.org/" target="_blank
At a couple of places in the parade we will merge to play a couple of marches so looking forward to a 120 piece band with 7 tubas.
Cant carry a tune but I can carry a tuba.

I had a masterclass with Howard Johnson today, and I get to play with him in concert on Wednesday. You could say that I'm just a little excited! :tuba:

That building that exploded and burned down in New York today? I've eaten dinner there before... That kind of freaks me out. Hope everyone is okay.

Well, it's not from the beginning, but the closest I could find:

As a young bort, I bought this *cassette* when I was about 8 years old. I loved it, but didn't know that it was all jokes (both the text and the music). I just thought that some of it was funny and I liked listening to it. Only years later did I learn all of the *actual* music involved and fully appreciated it. In fact, I was in a wind ensemble rehearsal late in college when I first heard "Lincoln Portrait." I leaned over to a fellow tuba player and excitedly said "hey, this is PDQ Bach!" He thought it was ridiculous, and soon we were laughing so hard we couldn't play.

Also, if you're ever in Leipzig, there is a FANTASTIC Bach museum there, I thought it was awesome!

Happy birthday, Johnny!
