Need a stand - HELP!!

Post by tsmart »

It looks like I need a stand for a low brass horn.

I'm on the board of directors for a local Historical Society (501c3 non-profit). Small town, financially challenged in the current economy.... but we have an old High School (last graduating year was around 1976/1977), and there was 3 tubas from the band. Well, not tuba's (sorry) but rather sousaphones.
All need repair work, and 1 is smaller than the other two (I have no idea about sousaphones, I play tenor trombone, and a little bass trombone)....

Where is a good source, or what is a good stand for one?
We plan to choose the nicest (nicest being a relative term), possibly have a little work done (solder braces back on) - and place one in our small museum.

So... anyone here have any clue what I should look for?
Please e-mail me, if you have a suggestion (flea-bay?, brand to look for?)

Thanks,
Troy

It depends on how you want to display them. There are chairs available (see an add in the ebay section of this board). There is the Hercules stand or if your group has a handy man (person), they could make one. The smaller one is likely an Eb, but it is hard to tell without more information and pictures.

It looks as if a chair would be more stable than a stand.
Correct?

New ones cost quite a bit - http://www.wengercorp.com/productpage.php?product=81 - $312 (+ shipping?)

These chairs are extremely stable, and heavy.

I'll try and snap a few pictures when I am back down in the storage room next Tuesday.
I didn't even have time to look at the brand (Conn, Olds, Reynolds - no idea of make yet).
Opened 2 cases, just briefly (small & large). The other is large too.
The small one looked pretty rough.
The larger one I saw, looked better than the small one (dent wise, unsoldered brackets).
The 3rd one, is still unseen by me - had to leave quickly.
going out of town for the weekend, or I'd go back tomorrow and see.

Have you thought about hanging them on a wall or even suspending from the ceiling? It's a cheap, effective way to do it and you will save yourself a lot of floor space.

We rent the room - concrete block, can't drill holes in wall.
Ceiling is drop ceiling, but that may be an idea.
Doug Elliot made one from a speaker stand - it looked cool.
Trying to find a used speaker stand....
