To shine or not to shine?

Post by BopEuph »

Big audition coming up Monday.

Visual is very important.

I just had the horn cleaned and fixed bad joints, new felts and corks, etc. But the sonic bath kind of shined up the raw brass a bit. The horn is a bit beat up, so I didn't want it to be very shiny, because the dents seem more noticeable. But there was too much detergent in the tank, leaving the brass with some pink streaks. I've been told they will buff out.

Should I polish the horn, or leave it as is? Is there any way to speed up a patina layering?

If this was a closed curtain, I'd go ahead and buff out the pink streaks and allow the patina to form over time, but these people will be checking out my every move.

I've read that Palmolive dish detergent has sodium bisulphate, turns brass brown in a hurry. Don't count on this being good advice, but it might be something to experiment with.
