Tyrell for Eb Tuba

Post by pjdicris »

Hello!

If anyone here has the Tyrell Eb book, please answer these few questions I have about it.

1. Is it a TRANSPOSITION of either the BBb Tuba book or the Trombone book, or is it a completely new set of exercises?

2. Was it made in mind for a three valve Eb tuba (i.e. does not go below low A-natural), or does it dip a bit low but mainly aid in working the in staff and above staff range?

3. Did you get yours from Dan Oberloh's shop, or do you have an original copy, and if so where/how did you get? (I plan on getting it from Dan Oberloh's website eventually, but I'm really just curious.)

4. Why did it go out of print? (Again, just curious.)

Thanks!

I was not familiar with this book. But looking around for it, I found it at Sheetmusicplus and just ordered a copy: $13.98 including economy shipping: http://www.sheetmusicplus.com/title/40- ... ic/4097573.

That is the common Tyrell for BBb tuba book. I am looking for information on the long out of print Eb Tyrell book.

Here's a link to the original thread. Whoever put these together states that these are not the Bb version, but are about half an octave higher, and are available from Dan Oberloh.

At band practice the other night a friend asked me if I had a copy of this book "40 Advanced Studies for B-Flat Bass". I said no and he said now you do. He had discovered a second copy. Your question was about an Eb version. I have looked through this book and it looks like the lowest note involved is the Bb below the staff and in fact that most of the exercises are in the staff. There is the occasional D, Eb, C or Bb below the staff, but most is in the staff. I think, at least the version I am looking at, would work well on for an Eb. I've given up the dream of playing Eb the range was coverable on a compensating Eb.

Good luck in your search.

If what you're looking for is a set of exercises specifically tailored for Eb (or "high" tuba) as opposed to BBb (or "low" tuba), you might check out "10 Studies for Low and High Tuba"(http://www.justforbrass.com/ten-studies ... 130008.cfm) by Johannes Brahms.

Of course, Brahms didn't write any studies for tuba. But John Van Houten took ten studies originally intended for French horn and modified them into 20 studies for tuba: "each of the Ten Studies appear twice (creating 20 Studies), one set for low tuba and then a second in a different register and key for high tuba. These studies were originally composed for horn and first published after Brahms' death (1897) hence, they hold the Opus Posthumous designation."
