Dude! I know John. I didn't realize I was *supposed* to know him though. What a great guy and fine player. I've been privileged to sit next to him in community band a few times. He makes that little Miraphone F sound like the perfect tuba to provide a foundation for a band. He is a fantastic musician.

The world is a changing place.

I would argue great players we've never heard of are extremely common.

The quality and quantity of instruments, teachers, recordings, etc available to highly motivated students is unprecedented. The quantity of students pursuing tuba in college and the general level of playing at most schools is near that of the best students at the best schools just a few decades ago. More to the point, there are whole studios of students that could outplay many of the big names of the 70s and 80s.

Those that want to 'make it' today face a markedly different marketplace: fewer full time opportunities and much higher(quantity and quality) of competition. Being 'really good' is no longer something special that will get your foot in the door to a career. It's not uncommon for 300 tubists to audition for a middling job and the top 50 easily over-qualified(we can still safely assume the most prepared player wins and generally speaking the make and model is secondary to his/her success).

By all means make a list... those folks deserve recognition. Just know, you will have inevitably skip more than you list.
