Eugene lost a part of its history yesterday. Civic Stadium, an old wooden grandstand that was a fabulous place to watch baseball, burned completely in about 2 hours yesterday. Our local baseball team (the Emeralds, a short-season class A team) has been playing their games at the new, modern, U of O stadium (PK Park, named for Pat Kilkenny, the former AD who donated all the $$ used to build the park. Oregon did not have a baseball team until Oregon State won a national title about 10 years ago, which did not sit well with the UO athletic department...). I have been to one baseball game at PK, whereas I attended about a game a week at Civic.

Admittedly, Civic had problems. The restrooms were ghastly, the locker rooms weren't much better, and there was no ADA access. To renovate would have been cost prohibitive, and when the UO built PK Park, they offered it up (for a handsome fee) for the Emeralds to use. It was everything that a modern baseball park has become; big screen, loud music between every inning, a parking nightmare, and very impersonal. Civic Stadium had just been purchased by a local "Save Civic" group within the last year; the Eugene School District (which owns the property) had not sold it to a firm wishing to build a grocery store on the site. Much small town politics there.

I have missed baseball at Civic. I guess I am a dinosaur.

How convenient. I guess that's one way to do it without a lot of hullaballoo.

Four boys, 10-12, started a fire in the press box. The place was gone in about an hour, under control in two.

Both the lead detective and deputy fire marshal are friends of mine. I trust them. Possibly linked to a structure fire of a residence last month.

The internet is a wonderful tool. I have had no, absolutely 0, experience with yard sprinkler systems until recently. I made some calls and found that the repair guys wanted $150 an hour to troubleshoot and fix my system. It was already here when I bought the house and it looks a lot like a half assed DIY job. It just got worse and worse over the years. Unwilling to pay a king's ransom and fairly confident in my mechanical abilities I went online, found my troubleshooting instructions, bought the parts and now I have a fully functioning complete yard system for less than $100. Yeah Me! but also yeah internet. My back sure hurts though.

I had a similar experience some years back with a national store that changed their name to include batteries. I won't go back either.

I guess I've been very lucky the last few years. I have a local Best One Tire retailer that seems to exceed the expectations of most national chains so I don't have a problem mentioning their name on a public forum. I've trusted them to service both of my cars for everything they can handle.

Now.... the local McDonalds... that's a totally different story! I love their breakfast burritos but I'll never darken the door of the one that's barely more than a mile from my house again.

It's about 99% in how the individual chain stores are managed. A good friend of mine is a principle in a consortium that owns twenty Hardee's in the area. He remains anonymous when he goes into one of his stores and often gets very bad service. He passes the information to the local managers and things are better for a day or so and then goes back to 'normal'.
