Too bad I don't like Stephen Colbert. I guess I could just turn it on for the intro sometimes...?

It would be nice if I could hear him once in a while instead of just watching him dance around. The fact that the group has two drummers pretty much says it all for me.LowBrassNYC wrote:Ibanda, the tuba player, is a Juilliard grad and former student of Alan Baer

Okay, I've been thinking about this post for a while now, and I'm totally flummoxed. What on earth does the fact that the group has two drummers actually say to you? I have no idea, no joke, and I'd like to understand this post.TubaTinker wrote:It would be nice if I could hear him once in a while instead of just watching him dance around. (to me, it doesn't say anything at all. Just that there are two drummers in the band. But I'm seriously curious and I'm not trying to start a fight or anything.)

I had a great day, thanks for asking. And thanks for clarifying, although 2 drummers doesn't always mean twice as loud. Just twice as many drummers. How was your day?

I'd like to hear some real music on the late night shows. Guess I'm just becoming old and stodgy.
Severensen sat in last night and played a few bars of the old "Here's Johnny" tune. It was nice.

Re: New Late Show Band
In the linked video I heard the tuba quite well - he was not doubling the string bass but was adding solid tones to the bottom end. Are they going to do what the Roots Band is already doing - who knows!?
As for the "problem" with having two drummers - that is not all that unusual for new and old bands. Sometimes one player is on the traps, the other might be playing hand drums or other percussion. The Grateful Dead had two full drum kits and they often played in near unison - that was a gimmick I never really understood, but they had a pretty long run with that.

Re: New Late Show Band
The Allman Brothers Band had two drummers, Butch Trucks and Jaimoe Johnson, who often sounded like one drummer. They complemented each other beautifully even though they played in different styles. Why not two drummers?

BTW, NONE of the guys sitting behind the desk today can hold a candle to Johnny Carson, and I'll bet they know it, too......

Re: New Late Show Band
According to the interview, these guys are all Julliard musicians. They know music. What they are presenting is according to them, "social music", which is another word for "crap I have to play to get paid." More power to 'em but I won't be paying to listen to this crap. Fortunately for me, I don't have to. Fortunately for them I don't count.
I am fortunate to have a great job that feeds my family well, but music feeds my soul.

Re: New Late Show Band
Too bad producers of the Late show weren't creative in the instrumentation of their signature Band. It sounds like they just said "We need on of those" and duplicated "Roots", the Tonight Show's great band.

Re: New Late Show Band
I have heard this group, complete with Mr. Ruhumbika, live and can assure you he has zero problem being heard, playing well, playing in many styles, playing melodically, or whatever other complaints that may arise. He is awesome at playing the tuba and gets some great exposure, a decent (I'm guessing) paycheck, and the chance to play with the best band I've ever seen. I would say the same carries for the other members of the group.
FWIW, Jon Batiste/Stay Human are very, very different from Questlove/The Roots, so I don't know where that analogy came from. I've heard both (live), like both, but don't find them very similar.
Also, if you've ever been to a taping of a show like this, you know that only a small fraction of the house band's playing makes it to the broadcast.

Re: New Late Show Band
It is GREAT for the tuba world that a tubist is a regular on a popular TV show! This helps Americans rediscover the tuba and will help to create new tuba gigs. As the father of an aspiring tuba player, I find this very encouraging.
I've never seen Colbert's show (I don't have a TV), but I hope the band becomes a success. Congratulations, Ibanda! Your hard work is paying off.
