I heard Carol Jantsch play the Daugherty Concerto, "Reflections on the Mississippi," tonight. I think we finally have a concerto which compares favorably to the Vaughan-Williams. It only took 60+ years.
Yes, there are other fine concertos for tuba but most of them just do not hold up. The Daugherty has something to say and is tonally accessible to the audience. Most impressively, it is scored perfectly for the instrument with a wind ensemble. Of course, Carol's performance is overflowing with grace, style and gorgeous sound, but anyone capable of playing the piece should be heard without overblowing. Beautiful scoring. I'd love to hear it with orchestra.
Thanks to Michael Daugherty for writing so well for the tuba.
