Well this won't help you with this damage, but next time your son flies on an airline, you could put a partially inflated soccer ball inside the bell to help protect it. If inflated just right, the soccer ball puts pressure against the inside of the bell to the case -- rather than against the bell's rim -- which is the weakest part of the horn.
I read this some time ago on either this board or another one. It does work. Of course an Anvil case or Walt Johnson case would be the best choice.
