It's -10F outside right now. Free cryogenic treatment? How cold and how long are those usually?

Actually, nevermind. That means I'd have to go back outside... twice.

My sci-fi knowledge tells me that your cells would simply explode like that can of diet mountain dew I left in my car.

Horns get a bit cold on the way to band practice in MN, but suffer no wind chill.

But all in all, I'm liking El Nino this winter. First time below zero this year.

It was 53 degrees this afternoon...now high winds & snowing, and we should get 12-18 inches of snow by tomorrow night, before the REAL big snow storm hits mid week ( no wonder my sinus issues are yucky)....

I lived in NYC for over 7 years. Anything not in the city was considered "upstate."

Come to think of it, the Twin Cities are the population center of another state with a bunch of north above it. I consider anything outside of the TC metro area (that's not, duh, south) "upstate". Or "basically Canada" (wait, that's the state motto for Maine, right).



You know, I could have gone to grad school anywhere, but I decided to apply here in Minnesota. There are great schools in Florida, I'm sure... whoops!

I lived there (NYC) back when when I was young(er) and stupid(er) - I moved out over 17 years ago, but I still live within an hour's drive (most of my family is still down there).

Folks in the Bronx would call people in Yonkers (just over the border) "upstaters".

Now, I too, live "upstate" ....

It's too bad I didn't know you were there - I would have liked to meet you at McSorely's under the dusty wishbone-covered gas chandelier for a couple of darks - we could have convened with the spirit of Bill Bell.....

Bummer, that would have been cool. Time always seemed short and went quickly in NY.

Funny thing is that I went to McSorley's exactly once, about 5 years before I even moved to the city. There's actually a decent chance that I will be back there after I finish grad school. That's a long way off, so we'll see.

MN is composed of "The cities", "up north" and "way up north". If you head south you might encounter people traveling from Iowa, so the lingo might be less clear there.

When I lived in Chatfield, Minnesota some years back, southeastern MN was referred to as "Bluff Country." Not for all the jokesters but for the limestone bluffs along the Mississippi. It had its own climate and not much relation to the Twin Cities only 100 miles to the north. Actually in the winter, things were often much worse in the South. Those prairie blizzards were nasty. Up a bit farther north we had what we called "Alberta Clippers" that would deliver the Arctic right to our back door steps. Well, if your house faced north, then it was to your front steps. I recall one of my first winters in Minnesota back in the 70s. Actual temp in St. Paul was - 54. That summer it got up around 105. Not much chance for our blood to aclimate. If you went to see if your car would start , you would need to let it run about a half hour or so to warm up. If not, after that little test start, the condensation on your plugs would freeze and then it would never start. I remember that ordeal. One of my initiations to Minnesota winter. I had to remove all my spark plugs in 50 below, bring them into the house to thaw and then replace them. We also had electric engine heaters to plug in. I used a crank case heater. Basically an electric dip stick. Today, with electronic ignition and fuel injection we really do need to worry about that any more. But we like it that way in Minnesota, they say it keeps out the "riff raff."
But I stayed anyway.

I have one kid in Ely and another in Fargo. Just installed a block heater in the Ely kid's car. He is a guide, taking people dog sledding in the winter on camping trips and guides in Alaska in the summer. A friend of his works at the ice road truckers station in Alaska, but I think he likes to see some sun occasionally.

The Fargo kid is in college for civil engineering.

Less bugs camping in the winter...

The nomenclature I use is "the cities", southern minnesota, central minnesota,bluff country, up north, the north shore and the red river valley. The Red River valley is the coldest (think fargo) because there are no trees and lots of wind. There are gates on the highway to shut it down during whiteout conditions

Lot's of music action with three colleges and a pretty active community band. Major music acts tend to swing through the fargodome also (McCartney played there last year. Nice town if you can handle winters. Plus you are that much closer to International Music Camp in the Peace Gardens.

Both my kids play baritone, so they are hardy and it all works out. I just installed a natural gas heater in the garage, so now I can work out there in a Tshirt in the winter if I want.

I'm thankful that we have underground heated parking at our condo. It makes my wife's mornings a lot easier. I work from a home office, so, no problem there either.

The bad part is that I take the train to school, and have to walk 10 minutes on either side of the train ride.
