Any projects out there?

Post by Tubajug »

I've got an itch to build a horn, but I don't have the scratch to scratch it at the moment, so I'll have to live vicariously through others.

Got any pictures of current or recently completed projects to share anyone?

This is my "new" CC tuba. Built by Norm Epley, it was a Miraphone 1290 body with a Meinl Weston 25 valveset. Sounds fantastic. I received it in what lacquer was left, so I've been working on taking it down to raw brass, and adding the thumb ring. It's a fun tuba... just hard to find a case for!

Awesome horn! It almost looks like this one that someone posted (another of Mr. Epley's horns I believe, yours certainly is much easier on the eyes!):

He really does. It's a lot of fun! This is my first rotary tuba, and I'm finding it is much different from what I'm used to. I can GET very big and loud without breaking, however, starting a note, or even changing at that volume, is taking some experimenting. I feel like it's a good restart for me. I have a chance to start up some new good habits!

I don't know if these fit into your project category, but I am finishing the restoration of a Martin Medium Sousaphone. Next I will start a 6 or 7 J (hard to tell which it is) with a recording bell in BBb, and then a 3/4 size York Eb with upright valves. These are not franken tubas, they are just restorations.

Very cool! Do you do all the work yourself then?

Here's a project that I'm currently working on. After almost 2 years of moving the parts around my basement, I finally took them to Norm Epley in Louisville, KY to start work.

I'm looking forward to updates, and to getting my new horn back soon!

Its nothing amazing as far as projects gobut I think its kind of cool. I am about to begin putting together the sub-assemblies of this 1915 J. W. York euphonium. It was pretty smashed up when it arrived in the shop a few years ago. It was a yard ornament and used as a child's play thing long ago before it was tossed into the attic. Fast forward fifty years, it was dug out and brought to me to resurrect. I hope to have it assembled in February and finish making it a new lead-pipe and receiver. It will then be glass bead blasted and silver plated returning it to its original look. I'm very much looking forward to returning it to the family who has had it in their possession for so long.

So far it has had a ton of work to repair the excessive damage to the valves, caps, ports and pistons. The bows and guard molding were pretty scary as well. The bell ate up the lions share of time but in the end turned out relatively nice.

Oh yeah, it will be used in the a local community band that numerous family members participate in. BONUS!

I do some of the preliminary work, but I have a guy who is retired. He has a shop attached to his house. He does ready good work at a reasonable price, but the deal is I never hold him to a timeline. Things get done when they get done. I bring one instrument at a time because he doesn't have much space. I seem to "find" these old horn or they find me, I'm not sure which is true. I sell, trade or sometime give away the horns as they get restored. I have kept a few unique things, but I need to keep the herd thinned or my understanding wife will become less understanding.
