FS Conn Double Bell Euph 5v $1600 - More info

Post by PaulMaybery »

Off loading more of my collection. For sale is a Conn Double Bell Euphonium. 5 valves. Upright main bell. Tuning in lead pipe. Silver with gold highlights. Small (tenor) shank receiver. Horn is perfectly functional, albeit with the normal double bell quirks. I've played it recently in church on some solos so it can handle modern pitch A 440. You will notice the bottom bow is raw brass. This seems to be a replacement. It was there 15 years ago when I acquired it. Silver finish is worn, but it will shine up. It could use some TLC, that is why it is priced at only $1600. THe 5 valve uprights seem to be rare.

SN 188880. circa 1910.

Sorry but I do not know the Model number.
This horn was recovered in New England about 20 years ago by friend. Not sure of any more details.
I acquired it around 2000.

The tuning slide is at modern pitch. It can be played at A 440.
However, there are scribe marks on the individual knuckles for HP/LP adjustment.
I do not have a high pitch slide.
This makes sense considering the date of manufacture. Low Pitch and/or A 440 was not yet “universal”

The valves for a 100 year old horn are of course worn, but they move smoothly and with oil have a good compression.
The instrument while very old, did not show any signs of abuse, such as really bad denting. Normal wear and tear.

The bore is fairly large - larger than my Besson Sovereign as is the bell size.
I would not call this a Baritone by any measure.

The repair to the bottom bow may have been a factory job. Conn did offer repairs and factory overhauls.
The fit of the bow is perfect. Just not silvered.

Also there is no case or bag.

Just so you are aware:
There is a crack on the mp brace to the bell. Needs silver solder.
The guard wire just after the bottom bow, on the first branch also needs the tip resoldered.

I priced this relatively low as there are a few issues that I mentioned that ultimately need to be addressed.
This horn would be a great candidate for a rebuild and replate job.

I have a 1911 version of the same horn. Mine is a joy to play. I believe the model is American because it has 5 valves in front as apposed to the Wonder which is 4 top action valves. This should go quickly. You have it priced to sell and you have a good playable horn.
