I think so. I've done the same thing, for that reason.

This one is on craigslist.org, which serves localities. The owner posted the ad to "flint". As far as I know, craigslist doesn't provide you with any way to look for something in all locations in, say, the US. There's a natural assumption that anyone looking at this ad would be in Flint, MI or somewhere fairly close by. I think you could assume pick-up only, even when they don't say it. That doesn't mean you can't talk to them about it, just saying these items have not been posted to a global service like ebay.

That's cool, I just use "hrender". But these services are external to craigslist. It's a local market, that like anything on the internet happens to be visible from the outside. When someone chooses to sell on a local market, it's fair bet that they expect to sell to a local buyer.

Sellers on Craigslist are nervous about contacting anybody, let alone shipping the goods. I wouldn't blame anybody for not wanting to ship a tuba, one can be shipped but it takes a lot of patience to say the least.

Of course some of us out here on the other side of the wide open spaces have a bit more than a day's car trip to get to the teaming metropolises of the "midwest". A drive to Flint and back would cost me thousands. For something like this with a case, it would be far more economical to get it back as Greyhound baggage, though I'd fly out rather than take Greyhound both ways. A cooperative buyer would help a lot here.

Greyhound shipping is so easy safe and cheap. I think many people just aren't aware.

Sure! Only a couple days ago, something came up here that was for sale right here in my fair city, unbeknownst to me. Of zero interest, as would usually be the case, but you never know. Interested parties could come from 3 or 4 states and a province, tolerance for long drives being what it is in the west.

And then there are those who will travel farther. That Kalison, if I were more the kind to be playing a shiny C tuba, I'd be looking at some way to get over there. And not some way to get the owner to ship it to me, sight unseen. You need to check it out in person.

I think people overestimate the safety, but we've been through that at tedious length.

But it only takes one person to make a sale. And if you look through these posts, sometimes one TubeNetter who is in that area will offer to check out a horn for another member, which is another reason to post these here.

Anyway, what's the worst that can happen? The horn doesn't get sold?

It is good to know what is out there.

TubaBum wrote:The point was, if you read it's "local pickup only, will not ship" why post it here? The remote chance someone here might be within a couple hours drive?
Not as remote as you may think. An hour's drive from Flint will cover a large population.

For this reason I've changed from eBay to Craigs List. Northern NJ reaches a lot of people: I don't have to worry about shipping, and I end up with cash in my hand and a totally resolved transaction.

As always, YMMV.
Thank you, some of us appreciate your efforts even if we don't mention it.

A while back I made an 8 hour round trip to grab a ridiculously cheap 20J from Craig's List.
