G Instruments

Post by Dan Schultz »

How long should be open bugle be for the following instruments built in the key of G?

- Tuba
- Euphonium
- Trumpet

I want to produce notes that will blend with a traditional Boy Scout or military bugle in G.

6/5 the length of their Bb counterparts. The length of the open Bb horn + the length of the 3rd valve circuit.

Thanks. I had guessed the multuplier to be about 1.22. Thanks for confirming.

G is a m3 lower than Bb. The ratio of a minor 3rd is 6:5.
But since we have tapers and flairs involved, it could mess up this easy math. A bit.

Please tell me you're thinking of building a G tuba! I would buy such an instrument in a heartbeat.

No. But.... I've cut a couple of those old DEG G contras to BBb!

Every GG contra (except the "baby" Getzen) has been made with BBb bass components. There is no special tooling.
