Silver plating a lacquered King 2341

Post by ddsbstrb »

I have a rather new King 2341 in brass lacquer. It is a year old, thus, it has a couple of very small dents in the bottom of the horn and a couple of very minor scratches.

Is it possible to have this tuba silver plated in its current condition, with the minor flaws. Who would do this kind of work and approx. cost to have it silver plated. I would be most interested in finding someone where I could drive the tuba to, and avoid expensive shipping. I am in SW Ohio near Dayton-Columbus-Cincy; but, would be willing to drive to several states away, if needed.

I know there is Anderson Plating; however, would the horn have to have some type of prep-work/stripped of lacquer before silver plating?

Thanks for the info.

You'd probably save money by just selling the lacquer one and buying a silver one.

Yes, the lacquer would have to be stripped and the instrument would have to be prepped prior to plating.

If I wanted an instrument plated, valves re-done, or even a mouthpiece re-plated, I wouldn't even consider anyone other than Anderson. Call them, tell them what you want to do, get a price quote and then (if you decide to follow through on this)...follow their instructions.

Remember, ALL of the flaws will still be there when you have the instrument silver plated. Fixing dents, dings, significant scratches, etc. is a completely separate operation. Anderson will do that, too, but it's at an additional cost. Or you can have someone else do the repair, prep, etc. and just send it to Anderson for plating.
