Help With Cronhite Chart

Hello Guys

I am sorry if this is a sooo noob question, but I don t know how to make proper measurement of my tuba in order to fill the chart of the Cronhite gig bags, please help me

This is my horn . A CC Holton 345 with a kanstul bell, so Its an hybrid horn, so need to make the proper measurements.



The problem is that I dont understand (probably because of the problem of propper translation) if I must make the measurements like this...



or like this...



In other words, I dont know if I must measure the flat area occupied by the tuba or the volume of It.

I noticed that in any part of the chart is asked a "side" measurement( or maybe I ve just missed it, if so please tell me ), I mean...by this side...

Please I will apreciate any help, comment or anything you say to me about this.

I have not spoken with anyone about this, so I cannot say with 100% certainty that what follows is correct but...

When I had Altieri make a bag for the G60 prototype I used to own, I measured everything flat and the case fit my horn perfectly. The two measurements that ask for thickest part should be enough to account for any depth requirements for the case (and therefore allowing "flat" measurements throughout).

Hope that helps and someone else responds to either confirm or correct what I have posted. Another option would be to contact either Baltimore Brass or Horn Guys (both Cronkhite dealers) and ask what they recommend.

Thank you so much for your reply thevillagetuba! That is the part I dont understand much, "the thickest part of the instrument" I used to measure the tuba like the 3rth picture(like the volume measurement). I am in doubt if It is like that or a thickest part of the bell(side measurement).

I am very sorry if I make a so obvous question. My mother lenguaje is spanish but I consider that I speak a very decent english, but even there are some things you can t just translate ( or at least me) propper and I want to be sure.

To get the thickest point measurements, lay the horn on its back on the floor and measure the tallest point on the widest section of the horn's wrap (measure only the height of the instrument and not the distance from the floor). Then, do this for the smallest secto on of the horn's wrap.

If this is still unclear, I can try to tame photos of one of my horns to try to help, but I am not home at the moment.

I would love to call Mr Cronkhite, but I am affraid that I can t undersrsnd him with the phone, I mean the lenguaje problem. I can talk with people in english in person and by text, but I made calls and It is diferent at least for now because I dont speak in english every day

I would not worry too much about getting the measurements super close. Just measure flat at the biggest points, and it will be fine. You will probably end up with the Gronitz PCK sized bag.

That's such a cool tuba, I hope it plays as good as it looks! If someone can post photos for you about measuring for the bag, that'll be the best way to show you.

But overall, you want the FLAT area occupied by the tuba. When I've done this, I sit the tuba on its back on the ground (not standing on its bell), and look down at it from above. Yes, it's a little tricky, but I try to do exactly what the picture on the form shows (which is like looking down from above onto a tuba).

PS -- You don't need me to tell you this, but your English skills are FAR superior to the Spanish skills of nearly all Americans, including myself. Honestly, it's pretty embarrassing when I travel out of the US and find that the whole world can speak their own language plus English, and we can barely be bothered to take 1 year of another language in high school.

Though it might be interesting to note that this is not so true at the location of the US retailer mentioned on the Cronkhite form. Spanish speakers may be a majority there by now, not sure about that. Not because they care more about learning all the languages of Europe, they would be native speakers, but they do play tubas and there's a slightly higher chance that Ferguson/hornguys may be able to speak to customers in either language, at least for routine matters.

And P.S... Your English is quite good, but I can understand being able to read/write it better than one can speak or understand a native speaker--I am the same way with Romanian.

@TheHatTuba thank you! And yes! Was worried to take a very close mesurements, if I mistake I am worried that not be able to put the tuba inside probably close the the Gronitz but with a 21" bell

@bloke thank you about all the ideas and help! Now I have a doubt I have just UPDATED the chart, this one is the one I have, there is a C to BB and a C to FF! So I need to measure from bell to the pistons and bell to...?

@thevillagetuba thank you so much!!!! I really apreciate all the pictures taken!!! I may ask a cuestion. in the thickest parts, the measuring should be only for the bell, or do I must take in consideration the mesurements untill the very top of the pistons?

Also please I have updated the chart, there are 2 new mesurements (really sorry ) from C to BB and from C to FF, this should be from bell to pistons and from bell to...?

The heights are measured up to the top of the valve slides as the piston will and should compress when bag is closed.

C to BB is measured from the end of the bell to where you measured Line B (as if the two lines would cross and the measurement at that point).

C to FF is the same as above but this time with where you would cross line F.

Agreed. If you can function in two languages, you're way ahead of a lot of people. My wife's first language is Japanese, and I tell her that all the time

Yeah!! I purchased the horn at baltimore brass!!! I asked Andrew about the cronkhite but didnt wanted to bother much through the Facebook because the tuba is with me un Perú now, and I didnt understood the chart as you can see hehe
