Coolwind Tuba: Clone of? Fitting case?

Post by Ulli »

Is the Coolwind tuba a clone of an other tuba, and which case fits for this instrument? The associated gig bag is only a camouflage...

Anyone tested these plastic tubas ? They seem marketing them "just for kids" (parenthesis and with respect because I feel that a musical instrument given to a kid should be a usable one with a good sound - not any toy).
But how coolwind/tiger tubas sound and how their real durability and musical usability ? I feel that with about 1500USD one should get a usable tuba - one can buy a good-sounding Chinish tuba with some 2000USD so plastics price is near that. At least partial 10th should be possible and in tune or pref to 12th partial. And false-pedals should also sound a 4-valve tuba to be useful (conc price). And I am worried about those (plastic!) rotary linkages... possibly there are metal enough... (?).. they seem weak and fragile ...
BTW: I recently bought a Tromba plastic trumpet for "real fun" but found it to be a usable for quite many purposes. A bit expensive it still was, however. :?:

I've had very quick play tests of 2 separate tiger tubas, found them to be surprisingly good. Super solid low register, solid feel to the valves and also a great range. I think they're a great B flat tuba. I still think they're a bit expensive though, compared to the other tiger brass instruments. (4 times the cost of the euphonium for example)

Only played 1 particular brand of chinese tuba, and after having bent the rotor arms with 2 fingers, I'm not shelling out anytime soon.

I bought a black one last days for 889 Euro. Sure, that price was an error: All sellers in Germany sell for 999 Euro. Half an hour after my order, my seller increased the price on 999 Euro, too. :D

it is a really good sounding, big horn, and also good in tune.
Not good: The seam of the lead pipe was not glued- thus open.
The inner valves, casting and rotors, are metal.
I think, the Coolwind is not suitable for children: Not to heavy, but to big.
I dont know, how demageable the ABS plastic will be.

Therefore I asked for a suggestion for a fitting case.
But in this board I find only tomfooly answers.

Please tell more. Manufacturer ? Or is it your custom design ? Why you have that ? Usage ? How it do in band ? Or just curiosity and a chance to have one ?
Plastics is not my favor but sure it has light weight. And fact is that plastics is permanently effecting our (childrens) lifes.

Yep. Checked youtube videos. The tuba seems to sound. Might been needed some very specialized plastics work. Not everymans job. :)

Plastic instruments=
they can sound anywhere from terrible (like any horn) to very nice.
I find that they don't blend as well other brass instruments. I personally have to work harder in trying to get the same feel out of it (without succes).
If you are basically the "bassist" this all doesn't have to be a problem because of your function in the music.

I have a Tiger. It plays in tune but it does not sound as good as a brass horn. I find it's an all or nothing thing with volume. It is fun to play once you get used to it. Would I recommend it for children. NO. Number one a lot of kids are hard on horns and the plastic wont take abuse. Second it takes a lot of air to get adequate volume and decent intonation. If I'd paid full price for it I'd kick myself but I picked it up 2nd hand so I'm happy with it for what it is. Would I repeat the purchase. No.
