On the bell/bow joint, it just gave us orchestral tuba players a place to rest your hand while the horn was in your lap and not screw up the finish. Is that what you're referring to?
Instead of talking to your plants, if you yelled at them would they still grow, but only to be troubled and insecure?

I have a couple of sousas and a bell-front King that are plagued by the 'ringing bell' syndrome. Split vinyl ice maker tubing around the rim takes care of the problem.

Adhesive-backed golf club or tennis raquet lead weighting tape also works--and can be placed inside the bell.
