4-valve Conn (24j) plus upright bell

Post by jimandrada »

Fun horn to play, but getting heavier every time I look at it. Or maybe I'm just getting older. Whichever, it's time to find it a new home.

Horn functions well, short action valves seem OK. The finish is worn off where the right hand holds the horn, outside of that finish is pretty much there. From 10 - 20 feet away the horn looks presentable, but there are a lot of dings and small dents - sort of like Tuba cellulitis. I think it was a high school horn at one time and probably dates from 1966. Recording bell is not original, but is in pretty good shape. When I got the horn it had a Sousie bell which I traded to Lee Stofer for the real thing.

Upright bell may or may not be original. It's in pretty good shape. There's one very tiny crack right on the edge of the rim but it hasn't spread into the bell area.

I'd like to get $1750 for the horn with recording bell and $850 for the upright bell, but will consider any reasonable offers. Tuba with both bells $2400. There's a bell case if you want it, but no case for the horn body.

I don't have any idea what a good estimate is for shipping. I've seen numbers between $115 and $200 on eBay. I'll charge actual shipping cost up to $150, anything over that I'll cover. I'll also cover Paypal fees.

I'll be happy to answer any questions.

Here are links to a few photos - if you want, I'll be happy to take additional pictures.

Thanks for looking.

Same reason I sold my 24J. I really liked that horn but it was very heavy. I found the 20J played as well and the 4th valve was just dead weight. Good luck on the sale. :tuba:

Funny you say that. I have an old 1930's vintage Bell-front Martin that's in rather terrible cosmetic shape - dents, blotches, parts held on with tape, you name it. And it only has 3 valves. But it sounds marvelous! And it's lighter by far. Maybe if I get a reasonable price for the Conn I might have some work done on the Martin so I won't have to sneak into the rehearsal hall in the dead of night to keep people from seeing it!
