Alexander 163CC Gold Brass Bell *Almost New*

Post by binlove »

I’m the original owner of this (not quite) 18-month old Alex 163CC, asking $10,000.
- 5 valves (5th is a flat whole step)
- Gold brass bell
- Solid intonation (no finger kung fu required)
- Colorful, lively sound
- Huge dynamic range and projection
- Cronkhite case included (black, cordura)

The instrument is essentially in new condition. Lacquer has hairline scratches only from shirt buttons. Valves and slides work perfectly. This is one of the new Alexanders, with sound you love, but not the unmanageable intonation. This is the quintessential German sound in a CC horn. The horn is very lightweight, giving it a feeling of easy playability with lots of feedback in the hands and at the mouthpiece. To me, this is one of the most aesthetically pleasing tubas ever made.

Instrument is in San Jose.

I’m happy to provide more photographs on request.

I’d prefer an outright sale, but would consider a trade +/- cash for the following.
- B&S 5100/PT-16 (6-valves, large bore)
- Gronitz FZ-127 (large 6-valve rotary F)
- York copy 6/4 piston horn (Hirsbrunner or Nirschl)
- Excellent, mid-size piston CC (Nirschl, Ursus, etc)

I was able to pick up a Hirsbrunner 193 (Bb Kaiser). That instrument checks the "german sound" box pretty outrageously, so I haven't played the 163 nearly as much as I expected.

I have owned 2 of these newer models and they are great. Alexander really went through the original 163 CC design (the original 163 cc was just a cut down BBb 163) and redesigned it to fix the intonation issues. Bows, bell, leadpipe and valves are all newly designed. Great horns and if tuba players weren't always looking for bigger this model would be a huge seller.

I own a relatively new Alex 163, albeit with a closed 5th valve wrap. Alex have absolutely sorted out the intonation woes that plague older models without losing the characteristic German sound. These horns are lightweight and incredibly responsive, more so, I imagine, with the gold brass bell.
If this horn fits your budget, take a look.

Jon - who has absolutely no stake in this sale....

If I sold my truck I could afford this, and I've ridden over 100 miles on my bicycle before. . .

I found $10 in my backpack today, so I'm only $9,990 short now. Such a pretty tuba, it deserves to be played!

Unsolicited comment:

Bin and I met up to try this horn. It is just as he describes it - pristine and beautiful. Sound is wonderful and intonation is way more than manageable. Seller is a straight shooter! Only reason I didn't pick it up is because our trade didn't go through. I'm sure that buying a new 163 from the factory will cost way more than $10K, so if you're in the area and in the market, check Bin's horn out!

Horn has been sold. No matter what tubas i play i seem to always go back to the Alex. The new model is incredible, almost as good as my old one.
