Thein mouthpieces

Someone posted here about Thein tubas, and I started poking around their website. I see that Thein makes mouthpieces as well -- does anyone know anything about Thein mouthpieces? Are they anything special?

Expensive is an understatement. I've used a Thein contrabass trombone mouthpiece in my cimbassos the last few years. I tried a variety of mouthpieces (tuba, contrabass trombone, and bass trombone) and I found that the Thein gave me the sound that I wanted. I was fortunate enough to try one before buying it, I'm not sure that I would have taken the plunge otherwise. The Thein MCL has served me well in the opera pit and it definitely helps me sound much more like a 4th trombone than a tuba.

It's the most expensive mouthpiece I own, but it is an outstanding utility mouthpiece. As one would expect, it does not work well in F tuba or bass trombone. I have no experience with their tuba mouthpieces, however with so many less expensive alternatives that seem to work very well, I can't imagine buying one...

Bump... just curious if anyone has any new information or experience with Thein tuba mouthpieces.

Not really new and useful information. What I have heard is that they developped tuba mouthpieces for C and F-tuba in cooperation with Hendrik-Jan Renes, tubist of the Rotterdam Philharmonic. And that, starting from there, you can have individual adaptations....
A tromboneplayer, I know very well and meet rather often, keeps telling me, that he is very happy with his Thein mouthpiece, because it "feels so good". Unfortunately I am not able to hear a clear difference. But who am I to deny, that a good feeling sometimes can be worth a lot of money.....?????

I did email Thein for more information, and they gave me a PDF with the various models and specs. Very nice people and easy to communicate with in English.

Wow, that Eb tuba looks pretty interesting. The wrap on the BBb looks like stacked freeway interchanges in L.A. Is there some compensating thing going on with the thumb activated fifth valve piston?

Hard to tell, but I like your description. The rotary CC is pretty boring, by comparison.

BTW, you don't want to know how much these tubas cost... however, a one-off handmade tuba *should* cost a lot of money.

Got the new mouthpiece -- looks great, plays great. Will need much longer to really form opinions, but everything so far has been very positive.

A few more thoughts to share, with the caveat that I've only played it for a few hours in my house. That said, you can tell a lot in a few hours.

The mouthpiece I bought is the Thein RCMF, which is 32,7 mm and has an 8,0 mm bore. Rim width is 7,55 mm, very comfortable.

-- VERY nice looking mouthpiece, probably best silver plating I've seen. Some cool details on the shank/cup "joint", I'll post a photo tomorrow.
-- Sound: Whoa... I was truly surprised by the sound I get with this mouthpiece. It's like the tuba is familiar, but the sound is not. It's a lot clearer, more focused, but still very lively and full sound. Feels very efficient, and can get very loud, very easily. All around, really easy to play, and a lot of fun.
-- The above point could be very much based on the physical size/shape of the mouthpiece. This mouthpiece is smaller than what I've been using for the past 3 or 4 months, which admittedly is a very large mouthpiece. The Thein is more normally sized, and seems to be a better fit for my face.
-- Would another mouthpiece at another price have given me a similar result? I'm sure. But for some reason, I decided not to go that route.

Oh, and the people at Thein could not have been nicer!

So, there you have it. I'm the guy that needs to have funky shitt that nobody else has.
