I would never trust my horn to the guys in the baggage department again. Add the additional danger of the idiots in TSA who think they need to disassemble your instrument to find the drugs you are obviously trying to smuggle. They can't put it back together, they can't even put it back in the case without damaging your instrument. If they could, they would not be working for TSA.

So, if I can't drive there, me and my tuba aren't going.

Should the Vienna Phil call, I may reconsider.

If you choose to go, good luck with all that. Take lots of pictures of the damage.

This sounds like one of those things that years later you will regret not doing.

I also agree with Alex, drive if possible.

15+ hours one-way, flying?

Where is it, China?

(Generally, I eventually regret turning down "once-in-a-lifetime" opportunities, especially for "mundane-everyday-practical" reasons.)

The hardest work for this gig would be getting the music to the place where it lives up to your personal standards. If you are willing to do that, everything else can be worked out.

I always ask myself at this point in life for stuff I don't have to do: Will this be fun?

Since you don't need to do it for the money or career resume - don't do it if it's not fun. At this point in your life you have to think how many chances to do something like this will I have going forward. If this is something that is one of those memorable things in life you can look back on at 90 and say:

Man I'm really glad I did that and what fun it was - then do it.

Heck I"ll even show up for it if it's within a reasonable distance and let ya know how it compares to Gene P.s renditions I've seen and look forward to seeing him play VW again in Nov.

If you turn it down, you'll regret it.

If you say yes, the inconveniences will come and go rather quickly.

Too much flying. Too much jet lag on both ends, for a single performance.

Do it. I've flown with my F tuba several times in recent years. I bought a seat and stuck it next to me in a gig bag. TSA didn't say anything- my gig bag fit through the X-ray machine fine. I suspect yours would too.

I didn't worry about the TSA so much- if something went wrong I would enjoy ruining some careers with a lawsuit.

You never hear of anyone who is on their death bed wishing that they worked more.

Take this mini adventure. Have a blast.
