Hi there!

I have a silver Meinl Weston Thor, big bell model, for sale for $11,000 OBO. The horn is located in Washington D.C. I really don't want to ship the horn, but would be willing to meet someone within a relatively sane distance from D.C. It had some custom modification work done by Martin Wilke, of MAW valve fame. He took the lead pipe off the bell, added braces to minimize contact of the lead pipe/receiver with the bell, vented valves 1 and 3, nickel plated the valves to help the sticky valve problem with MW valves, fixed a slightly misaligned main tube coming from the valve section, and affixed a removable brace to prevent misalignment from reoccurring. Removing the brace does change the sound, so you can work with that to customize the sound/response to your needs/wants a bit. There are some minor dings in the bottom bow and some scratches from uniforms/belts that are barely noticeable until you get up close. Included is a MTS hard case and Tuxedo gig bag if you want them.

For some backstory, I started with a lacquer Thor that i picked from 4 different ones at WWBW (when they still had a physical store) that the military bought for me; fast forward a few years and I wanted to buy my own so I checked on the TubeNet's and found my current horn. I side by side tested both horns (in the band and alone) and fell in love with this Thor. I've played it in wind bands, brass bands, orchestras, brass quintets, solos, auditions...everything since I bought it.

This horn plays very similar to the way most Thor's play, but I feel it has an even better low register and clearer sound than the others. It has a great sound, great projection and response in all registers, solid intonation, and every note slots amazingly well at all dynamics. Why am I selling? About 8 months ago I switched to playing a work horn for logistical reasons (and a new baby!!) and I just haven't played my personal Thor since then. I still love the horn and have agonized some time over selling it, but it is finally time to part ways.

The horn has been chem cleaned and shined up and is ready to go.

Good Sir,

I'm just curious as to how adamant you are on not wanting to ship the tuba?

Bump for such a beautiful horn!
