Speaking of TubaChristmas, how could I go about getting a button from this year?

When I got there, they had run out. Instead of a button, I got a yellow post-it note with some scribble on it as my receipt. Doesn't look very good on the hat.

I don't collect them. If mine survived a quick cleanout of my car Sunday evening (and I don't remember tossing it) you can have it.

Honestly, I really don't like buttons, and find them pretty annoying. But, I've kept them all over the last 20 years, so it seems silly to stop now.

I walked a bit over a mile to the rehearsal this year. Got plenty of honks and waves on the way, even got invited into a car dealership for a cup of coffee, but i was running late, so i didn't accept the invitation.

I ended up bumming a ride from a friend, so i didn't stop in on the way back either.

Last year, i probably was second furthest away, having driven roughly 2,000 miles, and arriving 10 minutes late mildly sleep deprived. But folk had flown in from Asia, so it really was no contest. On the walk back from that one, i had an absurd inspiration for decorating my tuba, the kind of idea i probably should ask permission from organizers before implementing...

Nashville TC was great in some ways, several Tubenetters there. Musically it was different,
with the singer dragging the tempo so that the various directors kept insisting that we keep moving and not follow her, which was fine with me but led to the T/E players being a beat and a half ahead of her in some places. Must have been an interesting experience for the audience....

Yep. And she wasn't half bad. She just needs a metronome. Or at least a treaty that specifies who gets to say what the tempo is.

We got a little speech at the beginning about the importance of watching "the stick" and not listening to what was going on around us, which maybe makes a little different sense in hindsight than it did at the beginning of the rehearsal, this not having been the singer's first time at this TC, apparently.

Two years ago, I won a free "Merry Tuba Christmas" hat for being the OLDEST player there. My being old is now official.

I narrowly escaped being the oldest present on Sunday. The winner was 56!

At the Sioux City TubaChristmas, our oldest was 72, and our youngest was 11. It was also the biggest turnout we've had since I moved here 10 years ago, at about 35 players (hey, it's a largely rural area).

We always do our event as a traveling roadshow, with the first of our three concerts being at a local assisted living facility. That's always my favorite one to play since the audience is so appreciative (I get thank-you cards in the mail every year for us playing there). A sweet old lady came up to me after we played and I was expecting the usual comments, but she said with no pretense whatsoever: "You guys haven't improved much since last year!" I about busted a gut!

I have not found it uncommon to see people who are 80+ years old at these events. Not many... but 72 as the "oldest" seems pretty young to me.

Elsewhere in that post is another video that illustrates what I was mentioning about tempo chaos.

And in the photograph that shows the four sousas across the back, the "T" is the friend from a community band who induced me to make the drive to Nashville. He's not on here. The "A" is "groovlow". There are some other tubenetters in the crowd, but it's hard to pick them out.

Looks like my home town had a surpringly small Tuba Christmas. But it looks like those who turned up enjoyed it.
