Best Way to Watch a Movie

Post by Heavy_Metal »

This past Thursday and Friday evenings, the Baltimore Symphony presented the two J.J. Abrams films, Star Trek and Star Trek: Into Darkness at the Meyerhoff in Baltimore. Basically, they used a special version of the movie with the music stripped off, and the BSO provided the music.

And they did an excellent job! The Lovely Naoko and I had a great time.

Nicholas Hersh (BSO associate conductor) conducted both performances. There were two tuba players- one would have been Seth Horner, who took over when Dave Fedderly retired, but I don't know who the second one was. That brass section is very strong.

I had never heard of a movie being presented this way, but it worked beautifully. There were all kinds of people there, including quite a few in Star Trek costumes.

If one of your local orchestras stages such a performance, I recommend that you check it out.

Neat! Very curious who #2 was.

Mrs. Bort went to a similar thing out here, the Minnesota Orchestra playing the music for the Pixar movie Ratatouille (one of her favorite movies) while the video played on screen. She said it was great (I had to stay home and watch our son).

But yes... Sounds like a great way to watch a movie!
