Tuba-related health survey

Post by Kleinsteuber »

Hey all:

I could use your help with a tuba-related health survey. It'd take about 20 minutes of your time, and could ultimately help the community as the results might point towards common tuba-related injuries and pathologies.

And yeah, you'd be helping me complete my doctorate. X^D

Here's the link to the survey: https://unt.az1.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=S ... bSCBHbU8Dz" target="_blank

Any questions, please email me at CarlKleinsteuber@my.unt.edu" target="_blank

And...I'm required to post all this stuff:
--------------------------------------------------
The Texas Center for Performance Arts Health at the University of North Texas invites you to take part in a research study designed to investigate the occupational health problems experienced by tuba players. The survey is anonymous, available online, and takes approximately 20 minutes to complete.

Please forward this announcement to other tubists, teachers, and students.

Yeah. Unfortunately I'm unable to change it now. The approval process took months, and I'd have to start it all over again. Just have to go with it how it is....

I find it interesting that I wasn't able to select any areas on the legs (specifically knees) where one would experience pain as I know of people that experience pain due to the weight of their horns and the length of time they occasionally have to use them.

Another point to consider is proper hydration: type and amount consumed. Playing on hot days without proper hydration can easily lead to dehydration.

Just completed the survey. Will you be publishing the results? Good luck on your Doctorate!

Thanks! I'll probably boil it down into a ITEA Journal article.

That was a pretty thorough survey- well thought out. Most of what I do is deal with statistics, so it would be neat to see some summaries in the future.

The only area I feel pain is in the corners of my lips (where muscular effort is focused), and that's because I haven't practiced consistently in several years. Before that I was going all out as a performance major. Now (tuba playing wise) I'm kinda like an old man whose mind doesn't quite accept that his body isn't what it used to be. I get halfway through some hard solo and it sounds great until my chops suddenly quit. . . Maybe a few weeks of consistent practice would get my stamina back? All other aspects of my playing have actually improved with LESS practice.

My horns are lightweight and are pretty tall, so they're comfortable to hold. I've never had posture issues- probably because I spend a lot of time on my feet instead of in a chair.

I stopped midway because I couldn't figure out in the "have you ever developed any of these conditions and did they affect your tuba playing" was unclear how it should be answered. I had answered a bunch of "None" when I realized that just clicking the "none" button may have meant I DID develop the condition but it didn't affect my playing, when what I wanted to say was that I had never developed the condition. I was unable to un-check the little buttons and so just closed the page and didn't complete the survey.

Shh.. don't tell anyone but... Just change it. The IRB will never know. Blame it on a programming error if they find out. (How would they, anyway?)
