Hmm..
Southwest Saga
Portrait of a Clown
Light Cavalry Overture(watered down)
Barbarosa

The last three are middle school pieces, whereas Southwest is challenging middle school-easy high school stuff.

There is a recent article that lists this by John Stevenson in the Instrumentalist:

John R. Stevenson, Most Recommended Band Music on 25 States' Selective Lists, as published in the Instrumentalist, September 2004, pp. 18-22.

When I was teaching I found a watered down version of Chorale and Shaker Dance by (squoooz the spelling) John Zedechlik. The title is Chorale and Shaker Dance II. It is a great grade 3.

The best way to find this out is to look at your state's official band festival list. There are lots of good pieces at a level 2-3. Find out what other directors are doing in that grade level. With my 8th grade this year we did Rhythm of the Winds by Frank Erickson - very good. Go to the Manhattan music web site and look for stuff arranged by Margolis. He does a good job and a lot of his stuff are on lists. Like "Fanfare, Ode, and Festival" and "Battle Pavane". Very good writing.

Don't forget to play marches. There are some great Sousa, Fillmore, and other ones that would fit your group.
