Seeing how that many school bands now start all low brass players on trombone in 6th grade these days:

When I was younger starting band in prior days
I never needed any valves in any way
But now these slides are gone and I no longer tenor blow
Now I find, I've changed my horn, valves open to all pressed down.

Help me if you can with these new valves
And I do appreciate learning new skills
Help me get my embouchure to sound
Won't you please, please help me?

Ouch, really? I remember that was the case in 4th and 5th grade for me, but 6th grade opened up the door to "baritone" and tuba as well. (Yet I remained a trumpet player until 9th grade )

If my kid wants to play tuba and gets told he has to play trombone... then he is getting sent to school with a tuba.

That's dumb...
You can get a good brand-new beginner trombone (Chinese, and better than J _ _ _ _ _) for only around $300.
...and - based on your track record - WHICH make/model of tuba are you going to get for him, and how long before you sell it, and buy him something else...??

Well, I also say that I'm going to stand just on the other side of the school property boundary line, eating peanut butter. Can't do it on school property, but can damn sure do it immediately adjacent to it.

Main point -- 6th grade is pretty old, what's that, 11 years old? I think it's silly to place a lower limit at trombone. Maybe if that's where you are starting, then sure. But if you've already been playing something for a few years, it just seems silly to me.

What tuba? Really beyond the point, but I probably should have held onto the Olds 99 that I used to have... but holding that for 20 years for the potential that maybe my kids would want to play tuba is kind of silly. I dunno, maybe a Meinl Weston 10 or the student Miraphone with upright valves. The small Yamaha's are fine too, for a small person. Who knows... It's a tough age though, and yes, giving a middle school child a tuba seems like asking for trouble. Definitely lives up to "old enough to know better, but not old enough to do it." Cross that when we get to it!

My boys will decide for themselves if or what instrument they want to play. I won't force them to pick the tuba, but they sure won't see much else at home.

I took my 2-year old to an outdoor orchestra concert the other day, and he was glued to it the entire time. Picked out the tuba right away "Dad, tuba! Up there!"... and then we got home, and he made me get out my tuba for him to play with. Could definitely just be a phase, but I'll enjoy the and "tuba is cool" (and "dad is cool") stage of his life for as long as it will last.
